Kurt Cobain’s body was discovered on April 8, 1994 in the Greenhouse, - a room above the garage by Gary Smith, an electrician who came to install security lights at the house in Lake Washington. Smith arrived at the house that morning to install the security lighting, and saw the body lying inside apart from a minor amount of blood coming out of Cobain’s ear, he was on his back with a shotgun resting on his chest. Smith found what he thought might be a suicide note it had a pen stuck through it beneath an overturned flowerpot. He reported seeing no visible signs of trauma, and initially believed that Cobain was asleep.
A shotgun, purchased for Cobain by Dylan Carlson, was found at Cobain’s side.
An autopsy report later concluded Cobain’s death was a result of:
a “self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.
The official report estimates that Kurt Cobain died on April 5, 1994, which would mean that he had been dead for 3 days before he was found.
The “Automatic for the People” album by R.E.M. was found in the CD player indicating that this was the last music Kurt Cobain listened to before his passing.
Cobain’s body was cremated, one third of his ashes were scattered at the Namgyal tibetan buddhist monastery in Ithaca, New York, another third in the Wishkah River, and the rest left in Courtney Love’s possession.
